In the meantime, Lola makes a flower book and other trinkets that she will show off to her friends once the flowers bloom. After reading the “how to’s” and then planting the seeds in the ground, Lola has to wait for the plants to grow. An interest in gardening is sparked and Lola and her mother go to their local library to checkout books on how to plant a garden. Lola Plants a Garden by Anna McQuinn and Rosalind Beardshaw is about a young girl named Lola, who is inspired by a poem called “Mary Mary Quite Contrary” to plant a garden. I thought that this would teach children to find books about topics that they love so that they can become an avid reader. I liked that fact that Lola’s love of garden poems caused her to find out how to plant a garden and then she read another book to instruct her on the process. I enjoyed reading Lola Plants a Garden because it taught me that, though there are thousands of books and many different genres, there is one genre specifically tailored to my interest.
